#satipoftheday - Parenting - June 20, 2021

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

In this special edition of #satipoftheday, we'll look at situational awareness and how it applies to parents.

As parents, it is our role and responsibility to ensure that our children are prepared for the real world once they leave our household. There are any number of philosophies we can instill in our children, but that's not what this post is about. Regardless of the belief system, I think most of us can agree that good SA is a mind- and skill-set that we can (and should) pass along.

We can start training our children fairly young. It is generally easy for small children to recognize patterns at an early age, and that's a great foundation for SA. As they get older, you can turn it into a game: "See how many out-of-state license plates you can find?" -or- "How many pink cars can you find?" etc. As they get older, you can make the games more and more complex: "How many people can you find with blue sneakers?" -or- "What was our server's name the other night at the restaurant?" -or- "How many doors are in this room, and how many lead outside?" Eventually, they'll be ready and prepared to go into a dangerous world on their own.
