#satipoftheday - Independence Day - July 4, 2021

Updated: Aug 5, 2022

Happy Independence Day!

On this special edition of #satipoftheday, we'll just go over a few pointers for a safer celebration evening.

Depending on where you live, you could be doing anything from staying home and lighting some sparklers with your family, to going out and seeing professional displays in your city/town. With that in mind, here are some ideas you might want to keep in your back pocket.

1) Anywhere you are setting off anything that is, in any way, explosive; always conduct your own risk analysis. Different folks have different ideas as to what is acceptable and what's not, so of course it's up to you what you want to do...but at least have some sort of plan.

2) If you're traveling to any sort of get together, remember some people still like shooting firearms in the air to celebrate, regardless of it's legality. If you know of people or places where that's known to happen, maybe steer clear.

3) If you're attending a public display, keep your head on a swivel and keep to your #situationalawareness basics, such as:

• try to park in well-lit areas in view of a high level of traffic.

• try to stay in a group.

• don't leave anything that even looks valuable in plain sight inside your vehicle.

• try not to advertise that you are carrying anything of high value on your person.

• try to stay away from dark corners and passageways.

• try to maintain visual on as many entrances and exits as possible.

• don't be afraid to look behind you.

• look for those who are not dressed according to the weather.

• don't rely on appearance to determine threat; rely on actions.

• if something seems off, it probably is.

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list. If you can think of some other points to remember, feel free to drop them in the comments.
