Let's talk about sound. Can your hearing impact your situational awareness (SA)? Absolutely! As a matter of fact, our SA would be pretty limited without it. After all, we can pretty much hear in 360° allowing us to pick up information from places outside our line of sight (LOS). Without going into the science, the way our ears send messages to our brains enables us to determine a basic direction of the sound. That includes noises coming from around corners and behind barriers. By putting what we see and what we hear together, we have a more complete mental image of our surroundings.
On the other side, our hearing can be just as affected as our vision during threatening encounters. It's called auditory exclusion. Think of it like tunnel vision for your ears. Only with proper mental preparation can we reduce those effects.
